Tangier city guide for The Times newspaper, UK, from meze to marinas in Morocco’s port city

A haven for creative souls, Tangier feels curiously low key considering the greats who have flocked here, from Matisse and Patricia Highsmith to the Rolling Stones. Hugging the Strait of Gibraltar, it’s a city with a colourful history, found in its 17th-century kasbah, where the literati once lingered. And now, after decades in decline, Morocco’s port city is on the up again. Galleries are emerging inside restored buildings, the medina’s whitewashed walls sparkle, and the recently built Marina Tanja Bay bustles with waterfront restaurants and cafés. As a weekend escape it’s culturally hefty, easy on your wallet and far less frenzied than Marrakesh.

My weekend guide to Tangier for The Times is available to read in full here. Happy reading!
